What is DAM?

A Digital Asset Management (DAM) system is a centralized solution designed to organize, store, retrieve, and manage all of an organization’s digital assets.

These assets often include images, videos, documents, audio files, and any other digital file formats considered to be valuable to the organization’s operations. At its core, a DAM system is designed to make these assets easily accessible to users. Properly tagged with metadata, and securely stored, DAM systems enable collaboration and automated workflow across different teams.

A DAM system is not a simple cloud-based file storage solution. While both can store digital files, a DAM goes much further by providing advanced features such as dynamic previewing, metadata tagging, version control, access permissions, and advanced search functions that make finding and using digital assets much more efficient. DAM systems also integrate with other business systems, accommodate automated workflows, and can provide analytics on asset usage and insights into how and where assets are being utilised.

A DAM system isn’t a substitute system for a Content Management System (CMS), Product Information Management (PIM) System, or Collections Management System (often used in the cultural- heritage sector). DAM systems handle the entire lifecycle of a digital asset from creation to archiving and support a wide range of use cases, extending beyond web content, product images or pictures of objects within a collection.

The importance of DAM systems has become even more significant with the tightening of legislation around copyright and the use of personal information (GDPR). Compliance with these regulations require tracking and management of digital content usage rights and personal data, making DAM systems indispensable for modern organisations.

DAM systems support the content creation process, enhance brand consistency and help organizations comply with licensing and copyright regulations.
